The Boxing Game of Thrones: Battle of the Welters...
TONIGHT....Saturday September 28, 2019, Boxing will bless its loyal fans with the highly anticipated unification bout between Errol “The Truth” Spence, Jr. (25-0) and “Showtime” Shawn Porter (30-2-1). This match-up showcases two divisional kings in search of unifying one of the most popular and lucrative weight classes in the sport.
Spence the Texan, currently holds the IBF World Title, a belt that he won from previously once-beaten Kell Brook in their 2017 bout. Brook, who earned the IBF title in a win over previously undefeated Shawn Porter in 2014, found himself unable to continue due to an eye injury in the 11th round. Spence has since defended his IBF title 3 times against varying challengers including Mikey Garcia (39-0), Carlos Ocampo (22-0), and Lamont Peterson (35-3-1).
Porter finds himself in his second campaign as a world champion in the Welterweight division. He earned the WBC Title after a 12-round unanimous decision over Danny “Swift” Garcia (34-1) in their 2018 bout. Previously, Shawn Porter earned the IBF Title in 2013 with a win over Devon Alexander. Porter went on to lose the title against Kell Brook in 2014.
Porter got another shot at a championship title in 2017 in a bout vs then undefeated Keith “One-Time” Thurman (26-0). Shawn came up short with a 12-round decision loss, and recording his second defeat as a professional. Since earning the title in 2018, Porter has defended the title once against Yordenis Ugas (23-3).
Saturday’s fight pairs two of the best boxers in the division, in a match for Welterweight Supremacy. In a sport that has exhibited a constant disregard for its most loyal supporters, the HARD-CORE FANS, the Spence versus Porter fight is refreshing. This bout serves as a covenant between the sport of boxing and its supporters. The best fighting the best at the best time has always has been the recipe for historical fights. This fight should be revered, and could end up as an instant classic, leaving us cliff-hung.
It could end in a one-sided match in which one fighter outclasses the other. OR, the bout could end with one Champion exerting physical dominance over the other. Either way, there are facts that remain. The build-up to this unification match has been epic, and has fans rushing to purchase the FOX Pay-Per-View. Lastly, on Saturday September 28, boxing is providing us with two Kings, holding two Titles, fighting for One Throne! It will be EPIC!
