The Champ is Here: Deontay Wilder’s Quest for the Legendary!
The Legends don’t die….they live forever! In the world of Heavyweight Boxing, Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder has sought out on a quest to achieve “Legendary” status in the “Gentlemen’s Sport”. The current WBC World Heavyweight Champion has already achieved a goal in becoming the first American-born Heavyweight Champion in the sport of boxing in nearly a decade. Prior to Wilder, the last America’s last Heavyweight Champ was Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs, whom lost the title in 2007 to Russian southpaw Sultan Ibragimov.
Wilder captured the WBC crown in January of 2015 by beating then Heavyweight Champion Bermane Stiverne by unanimous decision. Since then, Wilder has recorded six straight title defenses all by way of stoppage. The Bronze Bomber has dealt with some turmoil in recent times by way of injuries which include a torn bicep, and broken hand, both which required surgery and time off. Wilder also met with some turmoil due to failed drug tests in which the respective challengers tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. This has occurred three times since ever since Wilder captured the title.
On Saturday night (March 3, 2018), the WBC Heavyweight Champion of the world entered into a championship fight against fellow undefeated heavyweight, Luis “King Kong” Ortiz (28-0, 24Kos). The fight took place in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York courtesy of the Premiere Boxing Champions and Showtime Boxing. The fight had the makings of an instant classic in boxing’s most coveted division. Wilder fought through adversity to score a brutal knockout in the 10th round of the contest, and subsequently etched his name atop the heavyweight
division. Even in victory, he continues to pursue a unification bout versus the UK’s Anthony Joshua. This match is the most anticipated fight in the current landscape of the sport. Pending the outcome of Joshua’s upcoming fight against fellow heavyweight champion Joseph Parker, we can anticipate closing this year with all of our questions answered with regard to boxing’s Heavyweight Division.
